BMW was officially founded on March 7, 1916, as Bayerische Flugzeugwerke, an aircraft manufacturer initially known as Otto Flugmaschinenfabrik. The company was renamed Bayerische Motoren Werke (BMW) in 1922, though the BMW name originated in 1917 when Rapp Motorenwerke rebranded itself as Bayerische Motoren Werke. BMW’s first product was the BMW IIIa, a straight-six aircraft engine. After World War I, the company diversified its production to remain operational, manufacturing motorcycle engines, farm equipment, household items, and railway brakes to adapt to the post-war market. 50 years.
